Histones are proteins found in the nucleus that aid in the organization of DNA into tightly wound packages, enabling the large genomes of eukaryotes to fit inside the cell nuclei. There are 5 types of histones that can be subdivided into linker or core histones. Combinations of histones form nucleosomes and chromatin. |
Histones can undergo modifications that dictate whether certain genes are going to be turned on or off. These processes include acetylation/deacetylation, methylation, phosphorylation, and ubiquitination. These modifications can result in neurological disorders and cancer. Histone acetyl transferases (HATs) and their counterparts histone deacetylases (HDACs) are responsible for placing acetyl groups on histones (HATs) or taking them off (HDACs). BioLegend is proud to offer many products to aid in the study of histones and their modifications. |
