| In the mammalian central nervous system (CNS), fast excitatory and inhibitory synaptic transmission is mediated by AMPA and GABAA receptors, respectively. These neurotransmitter receptors are differentially segregated and sorted into distinct vesicles in the Golgi apparatus, and transported to specific domains in the plasma membrane of neurons (Gu et al., PNAS, 2016). The trafficking of AMPA and GABAA receptors is regulated by Rab GTPases and SNARE complexes. | AMPA and GABAA receptors are selectively sorted into different vesicles and targeted to excitatory or inhibitory synapses, respectively. The delivery of AMPA receptor-containing vesicles to the plasma membrane is mediated by Rab GTPase 8 (Rab8) and the SNAP25-syntaxin1-VAMP2 complex. The transport of GABAA receptor-containing vesicles to the plasma membrane is regulated by Rab8, and their fusion to the membrane is mediated by the SNAP23-syntaxin1-VAMP2 complex. |
