Gephyrin (GPHN) is a scaffold protein that anchors glycine and GABA receptors to the tubulin cytoskeleton in the postsynaptic terminal of inhibitory synapses. Gephyrin's function as a scaffolding protein is regulated at transcriptional and translational levels, which impact the formation and plasticity of GABAergic synapses, as well as the overall strength of GABAergic transmission. Low levels of gephyrin in temporal lobe correspond to reduced inhibitory signals and correlate with temporal lobe epilepsy.
