TIMP-1 (Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1) is a glycoprotein that is well recognized for its role in extracellular matrix remodeling through controlling the activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Independent of MMP inhibition, TIMPs also act as signaling molecules and plays important roles in cell growth, apoptosis, differentiation, angiogenesis, and oncogenesis. High level of TIMP-1 protein has been found in several types of cancers and associated with a poor patient prognosis. TIMP-1 may be useful as a cancer prognostic marker in combination with urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) and plasminogen activator inhibitor type-1 (PAI-1).
