Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has spread rapidly across the world to become a global pandemic. Although most patients have a favorable prognosis and recover; those with severe illness may develop dyspnea and hypoxemia which can quickly progress to or death. Accumulating clinical evidence has shown an abnormal and uncontrolled production of cytokines, termed a cytokine storm, in critically ill COVID-19 patients. This cytokine storm is the major contributing factor in the clinical severity of the disease. As shown by multiple scientific reports, COVID-19 cytokine storm and subsequent ARDS is driven by the fulminant effects of many immune effector molecules including chemokines, interferons, interleukins, colony-stimulating factors and TNF-α.
The COVID-19 Cytokine Storm Panel 2 (1-plex) is a bead-based assay, using fluorescence–encoded beads suitable for use on various flow cytometers. This assay allows quantification of 1 human cytokine, APRIL. This assay provides higher detection sensitivity and broader dynamic range than traditional ELISA methods. The assay has been validated by detecting expected changes in biological samples.
The assay has been validated for use on cell culture supernatant, serum, and plasma samples.
