AKT (Protein kinase B, PKB) is a serine/threonine kinase that plays a key in regulating cell survival, insulin signaling, angiogenesis, and tumor formation. There are three isoforms of AKT- AKT1, 2, and 3, which are also known as PKBα, β, and γ). Increasing evidence suggests that AKT1, 2, and 3 plays an unique role in breast cancer initiation and progression. AKT2 is amplified or overexpressed in cancer with a higher frequency than those found with AKT1. AKT2 is also closely linked to Type II diabetes and is a pivotal player in the Phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase/Akt/Mammalian target of rapamycin (PI3K/mTOR) signaling axis. The deregulation of AKT2 has been associated with acquisition of stem cell-like properties, responsible for invasiveness and tumor progression, metastatic spread, and chemoresistance.
