Gelsolin (GSN) is a calcium-regulated protein that serves actin filament assembly and disassembly and regulates cytoskeletal actin organization. GSN caps the plus end of the actin-filament to block monomer exchange, consequently, regulating filament length near the plasma membrane. Further, it contributes to cell movement and cell morphology. Four different isoforms of the molecule have been described that are produce via alternative splicing and initiation, including a soluble form. GSN is associated with a variety of diseases such as inflammation, cancer and amyloidosis.
