CD154 is the ligand for CD40 (CD40L), also know as gp39, TRAP and T-BAM. It is a 32-39 kD type II transmembrane glycoprotein, belonging to the TNF superfamily. CD154 is expressed on activated T cells. It is important for B cell co-stimulation following binding to its receptor, CD40. Additionally, binding of CD154 to CD40 on B cells promotes the secretion of immunoglobulin and Ig isotype switching. CD154 is also involved in the regulation of cytokine production by T cells.
